History

The Steering committee was formed in October 2009 after a number of meetings at the Mount Gravatt Community Centre and input from a number of local church groups and service clubs. These included Councillor Krista Adams, Wishart Ward, Brisbane City Council,
St Bartholomew's Anglican Church, Mount Gravatt, Mount Gravatt Rotary Club, Mansfield Rotary Club, Southside Sport and Community Club Inc., St Bernard's Catholic Church, Upper Mount Gravatt, Broadwater Road Uniting Church, Wishart, Baptist Church Upper Mount Gravatt, Wishart Christian Retirement Village, Anglicare Anglican Church Caring.

Each of these organisations saw the need and indicated their willingness to assist either financially or in kind to establish a Men's Shed in the Mount Gravatt area. It had become increasingly evident over recent years that there was a need for a range of activities and services that support men particularly those in the 50-75 age range.

MISSION & AIMS

To Provide a facility where men of all ages can feel comfortable and gather together to spend time socially, as well as, in a practical manner by participating in constructive endeavours that develop self-esteem.

Aims

The general aims of our men's shed are to:

  • Enjoy each other's company

  • Assist men of all ages and background through mateship, mentoring and support

  • Provide practical activities in a safe environment

  • Gain the help of health and wellbeing professionals when required

  • Provide instruction and skill training for senior men

  • Provide intergenerational learning and mentoring

  • Focus on men's health and wellbeing, encouraging and assisting users to gain access to relevant services and information available to them within the community

  • Address the issues of isolation, loneliness and depression which are faced by many men when they cease full-time employment or are looking for work by providing them with a space, tools and support

  • Provide a place for men - especially those who have retired or are unemployed - to socialise, use their skills (such as woodwork), learn new skills and mentor each other and younger members of the community
