Introduction to Woodwork

Introduction to woodwork introduces the member to the correct and safe usage of most handheld tools. In this course members will be given raw timber and instructed in how to mark out, measure, cut, plane and join timber using hand tools.

Intermediate Woodwork

Intermediate woodwork follows on from the introduction and introduces the member to the safe usage of most of the heavy woodworking machines. In this course members will be given raw timber and the plans for a finished box.. Making the box requires using most of the machines in the shed. This knowledge then allows members to participate in projects that have been requested of the shed and ultimately to undertake projects of their own.

Wood Turning

Induction courses are run regularly to introduce new members to the art of wood turning. A new lathe has recently been installed enabling members of the group  to spin up to 600mm in diameter. Bowl turning is being introduced enabling men to achieve their yellow dot on their badge.

Wood Carving

This is tutor assisted program that enables members to learn the skills involved in this artform. No previous experience is needed as the tutor can assist you to develop the necessary skills.

It is preferable that you have your own chisels and other equipment, and you need to supply your own wood. You can be assisted to choose appropriate subjects for carving or choose your own subjects.

Sheet Metal Fabrication

Sheet metal fabrication is the process of turning flat sheets of steel  into metal structures or products, by cutting, punching, folding and assembling. Sheet metal can be cut, bent or stretched into nearly any shape. This can be done either by hand or by using the pan brake, guillotine, spot welder and various forming rollers.

Metal Scrolling

Learn how to cut, curl and twist flat and square cold steel rod into various shapes. Then join those shapes by riveting to make practical or artistic objects. You are only limited by your imagination (and the length of rod)

Welding

The Shed has a small welding annex where members create or repair metal products using heat to fuse  metals together using either stick or MIG welders. Learn to weld courses are held from time to time.

CNC Routing

CNC routing is part of the technologies group (3D Printing  & Laser Etching.  It is a computer-controlled cutting machine using a high speed spindle. It is used for cutting various materials, such as woodcompositesmetals and plastics. The CNC routers can perform the tasks of many carpentry workshop machines.

Laser Etching & Cutting

Using design software you create an image. The  Laser Engraver is then used to transfer that image onto a variety of different materials e.g. Wood, Leather, Acrylic, Aluminium etc.

Small Engines

The group consists of dedicated men who don’t mind getting their hands dirty. They laugh a lot so someone must have told a joke. We work with safety always foremost in our mind. You can bring your engine/mower/trimmer along and work on it under supervision. No diesel engines or ride on mowers as we do not have the room.

Leather Work

The leather Work Group provides hands-on activities for those interested in making objects in leather. Methods involved include hand stitching, plaiting, lacing, knotting and wet forming.

A starting project for beginners is usually a personal leather belt with a brass buckle. It can be left plain or decorated with carving and coloured designs.

Other items that can be made include shoulder and handbags, purses, bracelets, necklaces, dog leashes and collars, tool sheaths, aprons, folding stools, whips, treasure chests, jewllery boxes, bicycle bags and book jackets.

No previous knowledge is needed but those wishing to continue need to purchase some leather working tools to build up their own personal kit.

Wood Scrolling Sawing

Wood scroll sawing is a challenge in many ways . Some designs require a large degree of patience. You can purchase design patterns or can create your own design.

If you are interested in learning Wood Scroll Sawing you need to become a member of the Mt Gravatt Men's Shed and join our group.
